In Tripura, two sons have been arrested for the murders of their fathers in separate incidents connected to substance abuse. The first incident occurred on Saturday night in Vidyasagar, Agartala, involving 28-year-old Arghyajit Das, who is accused of killing his father, Kajal Das, a 62-year-old retired employee of the fisheries department. Authorities reported that Kajal Das, a widower residing alone, had recently sold a plot of land, leading to an increased financial demand from his son. Local police stated that Arghyajit often pressured his father for money to support his drug addiction.
On the night of the incident, at approximately 11 PM, Arghyajit returned home and reportedly demanded money from Kajal. When his father refused, Arghyajit allegedly attacked him with a sharp weapon, resulting in Kajal’s death at the scene. Following the attack, Arghyajit voluntarily surrendered to the East Agartala police station, where he confessed to the murder. Police arrested him and initiated a criminal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. The authorities have confirmed that the body of Kajal Das has been sent for autopsy to ascertain the exact cause of death, and they are collecting evidence from the crime scene.
The second incident unfolded on Friday night in Taichhama village, located within the Bharat Chandra Nagar panchayat, where 51-year-old Punirai Tripura is accused of killing his father, Monirai Tripura, who was 90 years old. Reports indicate that Punirai had a history of habitual alcohol consumption and had been known to mistreat his elderly father. On the night of the incident, Punirai returned home in an intoxicated state and entered into a heated argument with Monirai. When Monirai attempted to intervene, Punirai reportedly grabbed a sharp cutter and struck his father multiple times, leading to Monirai's immediate death.
Following the incident, local police were alerted, and Punirai was apprehended shortly after the attack. He was presented in court, where he was remanded to police custody for two days to facilitate ongoing investigations. Authorities are working to gather more information about the family dynamics, any previous reports of domestic violence, and the extent of Punirai's alcohol abuse. Both cases have raised concerns among law enforcement and community leaders regarding the rising incidents of violence associated with substance abuse in the state.
