Two US nationals were detained at Srinagar airport after security personnel recovered a satellite phone from their luggage during routine screening. The device, considered a restricted item in India, prompted immediate questioning before both individuals were handed over to the police for further investigation.
Officials identified one of the detainees as Jeoffery Scot from Montana. The satellite phone, manufactured by Garmin, was found in his possession. Authorities reiterated that carrying such devices without prior government approval is a violation of Indian regulations and can lead to strict legal action.
India enforces stringent rules on satellite communication devices due to security concerns. Under existing laws, travellers must obtain explicit permission from the Department of Telecommunications before carrying or using such equipment. Past incidents involving foreign nationals have also led to detentions and legal proceedings.
Authorities have consistently advised airlines to inform passengers about these restrictions. Travel advisories issued by multiple countries also warn that unauthorised possession of satellite phones in India can result in heavy fines, confiscation, or arrest.
