Tension gripped the 22 No. Basti area in Cossipore, a neighbourhood in North Kolkata, early Monday morning after rumours of child kidnapping led to a mob assault on two women. The women were seen moving around the locality with small children in their arms, triggering suspicion among residents and sparking panic within minutes.
According to locals, word quickly spread that the women were attempting to kidnap children and flee. A group of women from the settlement surrounded them and allegedly assaulted them before police arrived. Authorities were informed amid the commotion.
Police from Kashipur Police Station reached the spot and took both women into custody along with the children. Officials said they are verifying the identity of the children and investigating claims by some residents that one of the women had allegedly picked up a child playing near Jhalua Math. The matter remains under investigation.
