A tense situation unfolded on Wednesday around noon in Singhibangan area of the city when local residents caught two women on suspicion of attempting child theft. According to locals, the women were moving around the neighbourhood posing as fruit hawkers and offering fruits to children.
Residents became suspicious after questioning them, as the women reportedly appeared nervous and gave inconsistent answers. The crowd then informed the police, who arrived and took both into custody for questioning at the Girish Park police station.
Locals claimed the women had been roaming in the streets for nearly four days. Their presence had already raised concern among residents who had been observing their repeated movement near children.
The incident comes just two days after a commotion in Kashipur’s 22nd colony where two similar women were reportedly seen moving around with small children, heightening anxiety in nearby localities.
