22 coaches of Sabarmati Express, from Varanasi to Ahmedabad (19168), derailed between Bhimsen and Kanpur stations in Uttar Pradesh early Saturday morning. The train's engine struck an object on the tracks, officials said. There have been no reports of injuries immediately.
Indian Railways has sent buses to help passengers reach Kanpur and arrangements have been made for the passengers to continue their journey to Ahmedabad. The locomotive pilot said that some boulders hit the front portion of the engine which got badly damaged.
Rescue operation has been initiated and efforts to remove the ill-fated train and clear the tracks are going on. North Central Railway (NCR) senior public relations officer Shashikant Tripathi said that the incident took place at 2:30 am. The passengers were asleep when the train halted after a loud noise.
As per the Indian Railways, seven trains have been canceled and three diverted due to the derailment.
