A violent clash broke out in Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich district during a Durga idol immersion procession, resulting in the death of 22-year-old Ram Gopal Mishra and injuries to several others. The conflict began when the procession, passing through the Muslim-majority Mahsi area, sparked a dispute over the loud music being played. The situation quickly escalated into stone-pelting and gunfire, leading to Mishra being shot.
Following the incident, tensions flared as vehicles were torched by rioters. Police responded by using tear gas and lathi charges to disperse the crowd. Around 30 individuals were detained, and a case was registered against Salman, a local resident, from whose premises gunshots were allegedly fired. Investigations are ongoing to identify others involved in the violence.
In response to the unrest, internet services were suspended in the Mahsi area to curb the spread of misinformation and prevent further clashes. The police have ramped up security, with additional personnel deployed to maintain order in the area.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath condemned the incident, directing authorities to take strict action against those responsible for disrupting the peace. He assured the public that idol immersion processions would continue safely. Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also expressed concern, calling for immediate action and urging the public to maintain peace.
