High Court declines relief to Abhishek Banerjee in DJ comment case
Amidst the Election Commission of India's ongoing nationwide Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists, political tensions have escalated significantly across the country. In a unified move, 23 major political parties along with an independent Member of Parliament have sent a joint letter to the Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant. The multi-party memorandum raises critical questions and expresses serious concerns regarding the functioning, role, and operational transparency of the Election Commission during this revision drive.
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh shared details of this coordinated initiative on the social media platform X, emphasizing that the opposition factions remain completely aligned on this issue. The decision to approach the apex court was originally finalized during an expansive 'INDIA' bloc meeting held on June 8, 2026, which initially saw participation from 21 political parties. Over the subsequent weeks, opposition support grew, leading to additional signatories endorsing the final memorandum submitted to the Chief Justice on Tuesday.
The joint letter features signatures from several prominent leaders, including independent MP and veteran advocate Kapil Sibal. Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Derek O'Brien also confirmed via social media that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) have actively joined the movement and signed the document. Opposition groups have continuously criticized the current execution of the SIR process, explicitly asserting that a formal intervention by the Chief Justice of India is necessary to address structural electoral concerns.
