A 26-year-old woman named Riya Banerjee was found dead under suspicious circumstances in Ward No. 5 of Uttarpara Municipality in Hooghly district’s Srirampur subdivision. The incident occurred on Thursday evening, around 5:30 PM. Locals claimed they saw her husband and two workers from the family's cable business placing her body into an ambulance and taking it out of the residence.
Residents of the area alleged that Riya had been subjected to prolonged mental harassment by her in-laws. They stated that the manner in which her body was removed raised concerns, prompting them to inform the authorities. Tensions escalated in the locality following the incident, with people demanding clarity on the cause of death and proper investigation.
Riya Banerjee’s mother alleged that her daughter had been tortured since marriage and that she had not been allowed to meet her for the past 10 years. She stated that on Wednesday evening, her son-in-law called and informed her of Riya’s death. “My daughter must have been murdered,” she said, urging that an investigation be conducted.
