27 inmates escape Baguiati de-addiction centre after vandalism over alleged torture

Chaos erupted at a de-addiction centre in Jagatpur, Baguiati, after 27 inmates allegedly vandalised the facility and escaped by breaking through the window grills. The incident occurred on Monday morning between approximately 9:55 AM and 10:00 AM, triggering panic in the area and drawing attention to alleged abuse inside the rehabilitation centre.

According to allegations, the unrest began after an inmate was reportedly beaten with a metal container the previous day under the pretext of treatment. The incident reportedly came to light when the victim informed family members about the alleged assault. Family members subsequently confronted the authorities of the centre in protest over the alleged torture. Tension escalated on Monday morning when the victim’s relatives, along with other inmates inside the centre, allegedly vandalised parts of the facility. During the commotion, several window grills were broken, allowing 27 individuals to escape from the premises.

Local residents have alleged that such incidents of physical assault are not uncommon at the facility, claiming inmates are often subjected to beatings under the guise of rehabilitation. The incident has raised serious concerns about the functioning and monitoring of private de-addiction centres in the area.
