A total of 289 people have been arrested in connection with the recent violence in Murshidabad district’s Shamsherganj and Suti areas, police confirmed. Jangipur Police District Superintendent Anand Rai stated that 138 cases have been registered so far, including 14 filed on Saturday alone. No fresh incidents have been reported in the past few days, according to the district police.
Police have identified those allegedly involved in the unrest and are taking action under a zero-tolerance policy. “Police are working with a ‘zero tolerance’ policy and full surveillance is being maintained,” SP Anand Rai said. Law enforcement has also established three temporary police camps in Jafrabad and nearby areas. Joint patrols by state police and central forces are being conducted regularly to maintain order.
SP Rai further stated that local residents are gradually regaining confidence in the administration. Around 100 displaced families have returned to their homes. He added, “We hope more people will return soon.” The situation is reportedly stable, and authorities are continuing security operations in the affected zones to prevent any further disturbances.
