Bengal Govt elevates IPS Ajay Mukund Ranade to DGP (Law and Order)
A shocking incident has rocked Durgapur, where a second-year medical student from another state was allegedly raped near a private medical college hospital on Friday night. Around 9 p.m., the student had left the campus with a classmate to have dinner. According to the complaint, while returning, they were confronted by five men who demanded money from the student. When she refused, they allegedly snatched her mobile phone.
Amid the confrontation, her classmate reportedly fled the spot. The group then forcibly dragged the victim into a nearby forested area, where one of the men allegedly raped her. A short while later, the same classmate returned and took her back to the college. The survivor was immediately admitted to the medical facility for treatment.
The student’s family, who travelled from Jaleswar in Odisha after learning about the incident, have raised serious suspicions about the classmate’s role. They claim he abandoned the victim during the assault and later reappeared after the crime. Police from Durgapur New Township station have launched a detailed investigation and are interrogating multiple suspects.
The incident has triggered outrage across the city, with the BJP linking it to the RG Kar Hospital case in Kolkata and alleging a steady decline in Bengal’s law and order. Authorities have assured that strict action will be taken against those found guilty.
