Three people were killed and one person was critically injured in a tragic road accident in Polba in Hooghly district early Monday morning. The accident took place on the Chinsurah–Tarakeswar Road near Sonadar Math when a speeding car lost control and crashed into trees on both sides of the road. The entire incident was captured on CCTV cameras installed in the area.
According to police and local residents, the vehicle was travelling at a very high speed when a dog suddenly appeared on the road. The driver failed to slow down and the car hit the animal, which was thrown into the air. Soon after the collision, the driver lost control of the vehicle, which first rammed into a tree on the left side of the road and then rebounded across the road before crashing into another tree on the opposite side.
The impact of the crash was severe, leaving three passengers dead at the scene while the driver sustained critical injuries. The victims have been identified as Yogita Rana (21), a resident of Haryana, Jyoti Biswas (21), a resident of Ranaghat, and Sheikh Hasib Ahmed of Dadpur. All three were travelling in the car along with the driver, Syed Sagir Hossain, who is also a resident of Dadpur.
Police said the group had reportedly eaten dinner at a dhaba in Gurap and was returning towards Chinsurah when the accident occurred while passing through the Gotu area via Alinagar. After the crash, smoke began rising from the vehicle’s bonnet. A patrol team from Polba Police Station reached the spot and rushed the injured occupants to Chinsurah Imambara District Hospital, where doctors declared three of them dead while the driver continues to undergo treatment.
