Extensive downpours lashed Mumbai and its suburbs early Monday morning, leading to waterlogging on several key roads and low-lying areas. The flood-like situation is causing major traffic snarls across the city and has crippled the normal life of city residents.
Mumbai recorded over 300 mm of rain at various places in six hours from 1 am to 7 am, according to civic officials. Several areas, including Dadar, Andheri, Bhandup, Kurla, King's Circle, and Vile Parle, among other locations, reported significant water accumulation.
The incessant rain overwhelmed the majority of the storm drains, causing traffic to come to a standstill in many parts of India's financial capital.
Mumbai's civic body (BMC) has announced a half-day holiday for government and private schools and colleges under its jurisdiction. Rainwater has also disrupted suburban train services as well as the BEST bus services. Several BEST buses were diverted from their regular routes and are running at low frequency, officials stated.
