Many residents rushed out of their homes in panic as beds shook and windows rattled for several seconds. Just a few hours later, another moderate earthquake of 4.2 magnitude on the Richter scale struck the Bay of Bengal at 7.56 am Bangladesh time, the National Center for Seismology under India’s Ministry of Earth Sciences confirms. This second shake was felt lightly in coastal areas of Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar, but it added fresh worry to an already nervous day. Weather experts say both events are linked to the active tectonic plates beneath the region, a reminder that Bangladesh sits in an earthquake-prone zone.
Authorities have asked citizens to stay calm but stay ready, urging families to keep emergency kits and know safe spots in their homes. Schools in some areas stayed cautious and held drills, while geologists continue to watch for any more activity. Luckily, life is slowly returning to normal, with markets opening and traffic flowing again. Yet the double shake has left many wondering when the next one might come and hoping the ground stays quiet for a long time.
