The Central Revenue Intelligence Department has got great success against gold smugglers. The smugglers were caught by the officials before smuggling gold inside their belt from Bangladesh to Assam. Central Revenue Intelligence Department officials have arrested four smugglers with gold worth more than Rs 10 crore.
The arrested people have been identified as Nirmalendu Pal, Sujan Pal, Piyush Poddar and Sujit Das. Everyone's home has been told as Karimganj of Assam. A request will be made to take them into custody by presenting them in the court. According to the information received, the smugglers were coming from Karimganj to Kolkata by Kanchenjunga Express train on Saturday. At New Jalpaiguri station, Central Revenue Intelligence officials suspected the accused and searched the bag, but nothing was found in the bag.
During the search, 90 gold bars were found fitted in a specially designed secret chamber inside the belt. Its weight was 18 kg 657 grams. The current market price of the recovered gold is around Rs 10 crore 60 lakh 702. Soon after this, the four people were arrested. In this context, Ratan Banik, the public prosecutor of the Central Revenue Intelligence Department, said, “Gold worth more than Rs 10 crore has been recovered from the custody of those four people. The judge directed him to appear in court again on Monday."
Significantly, according to the sources of the department, this is the highest amount of gold seizure in the recent Central Revenue Intelligence Department campaign. The gold was being smuggled from Bangladesh to Assam, investigators said, adding that the gold was being taken from there to Kolkata. Earlier on September 5, officials of the Central Revenue Intelligence Department arrested two smugglers with 29 pieces of gold biscuits in Siliguri Junction area. The total weight of the recovered gold was 4 kg 814 grams, whose estimated market value was Rs 2 crore 42 lakh 99 thousand 628.
