The opposition BJP in West Bengal accused the state government of hindering Saraswati Puja celebrations in several educational institutions. The BJP, led by Agnimitra Pal, raised the issue during the first part of the Assembly session today, proposing a resolution demanding a statement from the Chief Minister regarding the alleged obstruction. The proposal was read by Principal Biman Banerjee, but the Speaker of the Assembly rejected the demand for further discussion.
This rejection led to a protest by BJP lawmakers, with opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari spearheading the demonstration. BJP members gathered in the Well of the House, tearing papers in protest. The Speaker, expressing anger over the disruption, indicated that action would be taken. In response, the BJP members walked out of the House and continued their protest in the Assembly lobby.
Following the walkout, government chief advocate Nirmal Ghosh moved a proposal accusing the opposition leaders of disrespecting the dignity of the Assembly. The proposal called for disciplinary action, specifically the suspension of several BJP legislators. The resolution was passed by a significant majority, and the Speaker announced the suspension of Suvendu Adhikari, Agnimitra Pal, Bishwanath Kark, and Bankim Ghosh for the next 30 days or until the end of the current session.
