400 dollars, 6,500 dirhams and ₹1.5 lakh seized during naka checking in Asansol

A significant amount of foreign and domestic currency was recovered during intensified naka checking in Asansol ahead of the Assembly elections, with one person detained for questioning. Police seized approximately 400 US dollars, 6,500 dirhams, and ₹1.5 lakh in Indian currency from a vehicle during a late-night operation, raising concerns over the source and purpose of the funds amid heightened political and security sensitivity.

The recovery was made on Friday night at Kalipahari Mor under Asansol South Police Station, where routine checkpoint inspections have been stepped up to prevent the movement of illegal arms, unaccounted cash, and other unlawful items. Officers grew suspicious of a vehicle arriving from another district and stopped it for verification. Upon questioning the occupant, inconsistencies in his statements prompted a detailed search, leading to the seizure.

According to police, the detained individual failed to produce valid documentation for the foreign and domestic currency. The vehicle was reportedly travelling from Kolkata to Asansol. Officials said investigations are underway to determine whether the funds were intended for illegal activities, especially in the context of ongoing election preparations and heightened vigilance across the region.

Authorities have intensified inter-state and inter-district naka checking at multiple points, including Duburdihi, Barakar, Rupnarayanpur, Runakuraghat, Disergarh Ghat, and Kalipahari. Recent operations have already led to the seizure of narcotics and cash, and the latest recovery has further heightened alert levels. Police said continuous monitoring will remain in place to curb any illegal inflow of money or materials during the election period.
