No eviction drive in Burrabazar & College Street, clarifies KMC Commissioner
A major incident was reported in Mumbai’s Mumbai after a 400-tonne mobile crane toppled during construction work for Metro Line 2B near the Asian Heart Hospital junction in the Bandra Kurla Complex area early Wednesday. The mishap occurred during overnight operations and led to immediate traffic diversions in the locality.
According to officials from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the crane was engaged in lifting a pre-cast beam when a mechanical failure caused it to lose balance and overturn. The construction work was being carried out by contractor J Kumar Infraprojects Ltd at the site.
The incident also disrupted ongoing metro infrastructure work in the busy commercial zone of Bandra Kurla Complex. Authorities confirmed that no injuries or fatalities were reported, although the collapse of heavy machinery created panic and temporarily halted operations at the site.
Senior officials from MMRDA reached the location shortly after the accident and supervised clearance and recovery efforts. A 600-tonne crane was later mobilised to safely remove the toppled equipment and assist in restoring normal operations at the site.
Traffic police, in coordination with MMRDA teams, diverted vehicular movement from the affected junction to ease congestion. Additional safety inspections have been initiated, and authorities stated that efforts are underway to reopen the stretch and ensure minimal disruption to commuters.
