41% of successful regional films earned 10 times or more than production cost, analysis finds

Regional-language films are delivering substantial box-office returns across India, with an analysis of 17 successful regional films showing that seven earned 10 times or more than their production cost. According to the analysis based on available box-office data, around 41% of the films achieved returns exceeding 10x, highlighting the growing commercial strength of regional cinema beyond traditional markets.

Among the films cited in the analysis, the Gujarati film Lalo: Krishna Sada Sahayate reportedly earned more than ₹112 crore against a production cost of ₹50 lakh. The Malayalam film Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra generated approximately ₹300 crore from a budget of ₹30 crore. The Marathi film Dashavatar earned ₹28.47 crore on a budget of ₹12 crore, delivering a return of more than 220%, and also became the first Marathi film to enter the Academy Awards 2026 contention list.

Industry data indicates that regional cinema has increased its contribution to India’s overall box-office collections. Regional-language films accounted for 27% of total box-office revenue in 2024, compared with 31% in 2025. During the same period, the share of Hindi films remained around 55–56%, while the contribution of English-language films declined from 18% to 14%.

Industry observers attribute the growth of regional cinema to strong storytelling, controlled production costs and wider audience acceptance across linguistic markets. According to experts, content has become the primary driver of success, allowing regional films to attract audiences across India as well as overseas markets. Successful films also contribute to revenues across the production, distribution and exhibition ecosystem.

Several regional film industries are expanding into interconnected cinematic universes. Director Prasanth Varma is developing a mythological universe in Telugu cinema following the success of Hanu-Man, with Jai Hanuman among the upcoming projects. Tamil cinema is increasingly focusing on folk legends and regional deities, while Marathi cinema is seeing growth in historical epics after Raja Shivaji. In Malayalam cinema, the success of Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra has encouraged plans to expand the Lokah Universe into a larger franchise.
