48th Kolkata International Book Fair starts Jan 22 to 3rd Feb, 2026 with Argentina as theme country

In the heart of Kolkata's literary pulse, where the scent of fresh ink mingles with monsoon memories, the Publishers and Booksellers Guild stirred excitement at a vibrant press meet today, unveiling the blueprint for the 48th International Kolkata Book Fair—a sprawling celebration of words set to the million souls just like last year's record-breaking crowd that snapped up books worth a whopping 230 million (23 crores rupees). Slated to unfold from January 22 to February 3, 2026, at the iconic Saltlake Karunamoyee ground, the fair will open under the inauguration of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

This is the first time when theme country is Argentina. Publishers and Book Sellers Guild General Secretary Tridib Kumar Chattopadhyay and President Sudhangshu Shekhar at The Park Hotel Kolkata mentioned tales of Indo-Argentine bonds, from Rabindranath Tagore's romance with Victoria Ocampo to the football fever linking Diego Maradona's legacy and Lionel Messi's impending and most anticipated Bengal visit next month in December. "The relationship between Argentina and Bengal is also through football," Chattopadhyay quipped, setting the stage for a fair that blends cultural diplomacy with page-turning commerce.

The fair's international allure shines through its diverse pavilions, drawing publishers from Britain, the United States, Germany, Australia, France, Colombia, Spain, Peru, Japan, Thailand, and a constellation of Latin American voices, alongside robust representation from India's state-level houses—ensuring a mosaic of narratives that spans continents and cuisines. Amid the stacks, the Kolkata Literature Festival will took place on January 24 and 25, offering intimate encounters with authors and thinkers that have become the fair's intellectual heartbeat.

Yet, the Guild's gaze extends further: as the 50th edition looms in 2027 for a grand Golden Jubilee, plans are afoot for a nostalgic photo exhibition and competition spotlighting the fair's formative years from 1976 to 1996, evoking the raw passion of its founding era when Kolkata first claimed its crown as Asia's largest non-trade book extravaganza. This forward-looking vision underscores the Guild's commitment to evolution, blending tradition with innovation to keep the fair's flame burning bright in an era of digital distractions.
