Muzaffarpur hospital blaze kills 3 patients, leaves 20 injured
Chaos erupted in the Pirtala area of Nabadwip late Thursday night after several BJP workers were allegedly attacked following a dispute linked to an old Facebook post. Five BJP workers were injured in the incident, prompting police to launch an investigation. A written complaint was lodged at Nabadwip Police Station against six accused persons, while officers began examining CCTV footage from the area to identify those involved.
The injured workers were rescued from the spot and taken to Nabadwip State General Hospital for treatment. Two injured BJP workers, identified as Akshay Biswas and Gopal Karmakar, were later shifted to Shaktinagar District Hospital after their condition reportedly deteriorated. Two others continue to undergo treatment, while another injured person was discharged after receiving primary medical care. Police personnel reached the hospital after being informed about the assault.
According to the injured workers, the dispute initially began over an old social media post, though they alleged that the attack was politically motivated. They claimed the assault was carried out in a planned manner late at night. Following the incident, BJP workers and supporters gathered at the hospital premises and staged a protest demanding immediate arrests and strict action against those responsible for the attack.
Tanmoy Kundu, vice-president of BJP’s Nabadwip Town North Mandal unit, said he had attended a programme in Ward No. 16 along with BJP worker Akshay Biswas. According to him, Akshay left the venue before the programme concluded. While returning home, Tanmoy noticed several youths standing near the Pirtala crossing. He alleged that many of them fled immediately after he stepped out of his vehicle. He then found Akshay and another youth injured and bleeding from head wounds.
Tanmoy Kundu alleged that the injured workers identified several accused persons, including Govinda and Bittu Singh. He said photographs of the accused had already been provided to the police. BJP leaders alleged that workers linked to the ruling All India Trinamool Congress were behind the assault. Tanmoy Kundu also claimed that some individuals who had earlier been associated with Trinamool and now identified themselves as BJP supporters were creating unrest in the area and targeting workers from both parties.
