Five people died and one was critically injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a Maruti van early Tuesday morning in Karimpur, Nadia district. The accident took place around 7 AM in the Kathalia area on the Krishnagar–Karimpur State Highway. According to police sources, the bus was travelling from Kolkata towards Karimpur, while the Maruti van was heading towards Kolkata.
Local sources said the van was carrying passengers who were travelling to Kolkata for medical treatment. At the Kathalia stretch of the highway, the bus reportedly lost control and hit the Maruti van with force, pushing it into a roadside tree. The impact left the van completely mangled. Hearing a loud crash, local residents rushed to the spot and saw all van passengers lying bloodied inside the vehicle. The bus passengers also reached the site of the crash.
Police from Karimpur police station arrived shortly after and recovered the bodies from inside the van. All five occupants of the Maruti van were declared dead at Karimpur Rural Hospital. One survivor from the van, in critical condition, is undergoing treatment at the same hospital. The identities of the deceased have not yet been officially released.
Eyewitnesses stated that the van crumpled under the impact of the collision. "The crash sound was extremely loud. We rushed to the spot and found the van flattened," a local resident said. Police have begun an investigation into the incident. No arrests have been made so far.
