National lok adalats (NLA) organized by Jharkhand State Legal Services Authority (JHALSA) on Saturday disposed of 4,55,983 disputes, including 57,913 cases pending in various courts of the state.

JHALSA authorities said that 3,98,070 cases were settled before trial and an amount of Rs 384.89 crore was settled in the proceedings. These cases mostly involved complex crimes involving banks, labor, land acquisition and accident claims. As many as 138 cases, including 28 cases pending in courts, were disposed of in the NLA held at the Jharkhand High Court. An amount of three million crowns was also settled.

The exercise was conducted by three benches headed by Justice Sujit Narayan Prasad, Justice Anuba Rawat Choudhary and Justice Sanjay Kumar Dwivedi. Meanwhile, more than 76,000 cases have been disposed of and an amount of Rs 64 crore has been settled in the NLA at the Ranchi court. An amount of Rs 46 crore was distributed under the Jharkhand Victims Compensation Act and Rs 80 crore among road accident victims.

Notable among the cases handled is the provision of five lakh rupees to Kushagra Kamal, son of Payal Khatri, who was allegedly murdered for dowry. Khari married Ravindra Kumar in February 2007. However, the accused soon started harassing Khatri for one lakh rupees and a bicycle as dowry. The accused allegedly set Khatri on fire in January 2009, leading to her death.
