A 50-year-old irrigation canal in Nandanpur village, under Harinarpur Gram Panchayat in Jaynagar, was allegedly blocked and seized overnight using a JCB. The canal, which farmers relied on for irrigation, was filled with soil on both sides, and large ponds were created for fish and prawn farming. The remaining land was leveled, reportedly for future settlements and gardens. Local residents identified Ismail Paik of Harinarayanpur village as the prime accused in the case.
The matter came to light when villagers discovered the canal’s obstruction in the morning and informed local authorities. Farmers protested, stating that the water source was crucial for agricultural activities in the region. Police launched an investigation, and Jaynagar authorities arrested Ismail Paik on charges of illegal land encroachment and unauthorized modification of a public water body. Officials confirmed that large-scale soil dumping had altered the water flow, impacting irrigation.
Following the arrest, authorities assured villagers that action would be taken to restore the canal. The administration is assessing the extent of damage and possible restoration measures. Officials are also reviewing legal provisions to prevent similar cases in the future.
