500 CCTV cameras to strengthen security in Diamond Harbour after Pahalgam terror attack

Following the recent terrorist attack on tourists in Kashmir’s Pahalgam, the Diamond Harbour Police District has initiated a major security upgrade, deciding to install 500 CCTV cameras in key locations. The decision comes as part of a broader effort to strengthen surveillance, particularly in tourist-heavy areas, and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the region. The move also addresses concerns about the vulnerability of the area, especially considering its proximity to the Sundarbans and the possibility of infiltrations from across the border.

The cameras will be strategically placed across Diamond Harbour, including important roadways such as National Highway 117, and in critical tourist zones. This extensive surveillance system will include 200 zoom cameras and 300 bullet cameras, offering enhanced coverage in areas with high traffic and footfall. The cameras will aid not only in preventing potential terrorist activity but also in monitoring criminal activity, improving traffic management, and ensuring public safety.

The installation process is being managed by the district council, which has been allocated a budget of ₹3.5 crore for the project. The cameras are expected to be high-quality models capable of capturing clear footage, even during nighttime, ensuring continuous monitoring of the area. The footage will be monitored from a central control room, providing authorities with real-time data and a better overview of activities in the district.

Diamond Harbour has long been a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors due to its scenic beauty and proximity to the Sundarbans. The area is considered a high-risk zone for infiltration due to its location near the border. The installation of CCTV cameras is expected to enhance security, particularly for tourists and locals, by allowing law enforcement to quickly respond to any suspicious activities and ensure public safety.

The proposal for this security upgrade was initiated by Abhishek Banerjee, the Member of Parliament from Diamond Harbour, after concerns about safety were raised during a recent community service event. The state government approved the plan, and work has already begun to implement the new security measures. Once completed, the upgraded surveillance system is expected to improve law enforcement operations and significantly reduce potential threats in the region.
