Six people, including a two-year-old girl, died after a four-storey building collapsed in Delhi’s Janta Mazdoor Colony near Idgah in the Welcome area on Saturday morning. The bodies have been identified as Matloob (50), his wife Rabia (46), their sons Javed (23) and Abdulla (15), Zubia (27), and her daughter Fozia (2). All deceased were residents of the collapsed building.
According to police, the incident was reported around 7:04 am. Three of the building’s storeys had collapsed by the time authorities arrived. A total of eight people have been rescued with injuries—seven were taken to Jag Pravesh Chandra Hospital and one to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital. Among the injured are Matloob’s sons Parvez and Naved, Parvez’s wife Siza, and their one-year-old son Ahmad.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northeast) Sandeep Lamba stated that Matloob was the owner of the building and lived there with his family. He said, “So far, eight injured persons have been rescued — seven have been shifted to JPC Hospital and one to GTB Hospital. All the listed missing persons have been rescued; however, the rescue operation is still ongoing.” He also noted that the ground and first floors of the building were unoccupied at the time of the incident, and the building opposite also sustained some damage.
Personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Delhi Police, and other emergency services are engaged in search and rescue efforts at the site. Teams are working to clear the rubble and ensure no individuals remain trapped. The injured from the nearby damaged building have also been hospitalized.
Eyewitness Asma, a resident of A Block, said, “It was about 7:45 am, I was resting on my cot and then suddenly heard a deafening sound... I came outside and saw a pall of dust all around.” Another injured local, Anees Ahmad Ansari, said, “As the building collapsed, the rubble hit our building, and I also got injured.” Locals assisted in the rescue before the arrival of official teams.
