A devastating quarry accident in Andhra Pradesh's Bapatla district has claimed the lives of at least six workers and injured 10 others. The tragedy occurred on Sunday morning at a construction site near Ballikurava when a large section of rock collapsed, burying the labourers under tons of debris. Rescue operations were swiftly initiated, but four of the injured remain in critical condition at Narasaraopet Government Hospital.
According to police sources, the victims were migrant workers from Odisha who had traveled to Andhra Pradesh in search of work. While four bodies have been recovered from the rubble, efforts are still underway to retrieve the remaining two victims. Officials suspect that the accident was caused by a failure of the quarry management to implement essential safety measures. Bapatla SP Tushar Dudi and District Collector J Venkata Murali are on-site, overseeing the rescue and recovery efforts.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has expressed profound grief over the loss of lives and extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. He has ordered a thorough probe into the cause of the accident and directed officials to ensure that the injured receive the best possible medical treatment. Former Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy also expressed shock and grief, calling the incident "heart-wrenching" and urging the government to provide immediate assistance to the affected families.
