6-year-old girl among 4 deaths with 10 injured in Navi Mumbai fire tragedy

A ferocious fire erupted at Raheja Residency in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, transforming a peaceful high-rise into a scene of unimaginable chaos around midnight. What began as a spark on the 10th floor quickly roared upwards to the 11th and 12th levels, trapping families in their homes and turning hallways into walls of smoke and flame. Among the heartbreaking losses were four lives, including a innocent six-year-old girl named Vedika Sundar Balakrishnan, her father Sundar (44), Pooja Rajan (39), and elderly resident Kamla Hiralal Jain (84)—a stark reminder of how swiftly disaster can strike in densely packed urban towers. As screams pierced the night, brave firefighters from stations across Navi Mumbai—Vashi, Nerul, Airoli, and Koparkhairane—rushed to the fire scene, battling the blaze for hours with hose lines and unyielding determination to save as many as they could.

The rapid spread of the fire with thick smoke forcing many to huddle on balconies or flee down via smoke-choked stairs. Rescue teams worked tirelessly, pulling out around 10 to 15 people amid the inferno, though not without cost—several survivors from different families suffered burns and smoke inhalation, landing in critical care at nearby Fortis Hiranandani and MGM Hospitals. Chief Fire Officer of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation Purushottam Jadhav recounted the intensity: "We laid hoses immediately and ensured every corner was searched—no one was left behind." Yet, the toll underscores the vulnerabilities in older residential complexes, where escape routes can become death traps in seconds.

Officials from the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation's Fire Department launched a probe into the fire's origin, still shrouded in mystery despite initial signs pointing to a single flat on the 10th floor. Visuals from the site show twisted metal and soot-blackened facades, a grim backdrop to the local area's grief. Families of the injured clung to hopes of recovery, while tributes poured in for the young girl whose laughter was silenced too soon. This tragedy not only claims lives but ignites urgent calls for better fire safety drills, upgraded alarms, and stricter building codes—measures that could prevent the next midnight nightmare from becoming reality.
