Raj Hospitals surgeon Dr Ashish Kumar Modi performed laparoscopic surgery on a 63-year-old obese man for a grade 3 hiatal hernia, the hospital said in a statement issued on Tuesday.
“A hiatus hernia is a condition where the upper part of the stomach protrudes above the opening in the diaphragm through which the food tube passes. A grade 1 hiatal hernia is treated with medication and a healthy lifestyle, but grade 3 is rare and can only be cured with surgery,” it said.
A patient presented to the emergency department at Raj Hospitals with complaints of frequent vomiting whenever he had any food for the past five days. He also complained of difficulty breathing and constantly feel full.
On consultation with Dr. Modi, the patient's stomach was found to be bloated for many days. After a series of examinations, the patient was found to have a grade 3 hiatal hernia,” as per report. Dr. Modi performed an operation using a laparoscopic method to pull the upper part of the stomach, which came above the opening of the diaphragm, out of the chest and seal the gap. The patient is now completely healthy, he added.
Apart from Dr. Modi, Dr. Ravish Ranjan (Gastroenterology), Dr. Fuzail Server (Anaesthetist) and the team of doctors present in the operation theater contributed to the success of the operation.
