West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched a scathing attack on actor-turned-politician Mithun Chakraborty, accusing him of abandoning the Trinamool Congress (TMC) to join hands with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in order to shield his son from legal troubles. Speaking at an election rally in Islampur, Banerjee criticized Chakraborty's move to align with the BJP, alleging that he sought refuge with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) to evade scrutiny in a case involving his son's canceled wedding due to a police investigation into a rape accusation.

Chakraborty vehemently denied Banerjee's allegations, dismissing them as baseless while campaigning for the BJP in Darjeeling. The actor-politician's political journey, from being a TMC Rajya Sabha MP to affiliating with the BJP, has been marred by controversies, including his association with the Saradha scam, which tarnished his image as the group's brand ambassador. Despite speculation surrounding his return to politics after a meeting with RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, Chakraborty officially joined the BJP on March 7, 2021, at a rally in Kolkata's Brigade Parade Ground, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the crowd.

Mamata Banerjee accuses Mithun Chakraborty of betraying TMC, alleging BJP affiliation to protect his son, amid denials from Chakraborty and controversies surrounding his political journey.
