Muzaffarpur hospital blaze kills 3 patients, leaves 20 injured
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has clarified that flight operations from the existing airstrip in Malda are technically unfeasible due to the inadequate length of the runway and the presence of illegally constructed multi-storied buildings surrounding the airport premises. Following this assessment, the administration has initiated plans to establish a new Greenfield airport at an alternative location within the district. Administrative sources stated that the process of identifying suitable land for the proposed airport has already been intensified.
According to the report submitted by central experts, the existing runway is too short to support the landing and takeoff of modern commercial aircraft. The report further stated that several high-rise buildings, towers, and hotels have been constructed around the airport premises without obtaining the mandatory No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Airports Authority of India. These structures have emerged as major obstacles to safe aviation operations in the area.
Administrative sources indicated that authorities are now focusing on identifying a technically suitable site for the proposed Greenfield airport project in Malda. The search process is being conducted in view of operational requirements and aviation safety standards. Officials are also examining land availability and infrastructure feasibility for the proposed airport project following the deadlock over the existing airstrip.
