Bengal Govt elevates IPS Ajay Mukund Ranade to DGP (Law and Order)
Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee on Monday appeared at the Calcutta High Court in connection with the election petition filed over the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha seat. The petition was moved by BJP candidate Abhijit Das, who was defeated in the 2024 polls. Banerjee arrived at the court premises around 11 a.m. through the F Gate, accompanied by his convoy.
He went to the office of the oath commissioner, where he remained for about ten minutes. During this time, he signed the required documents before submitting his affidavit in reply to the petition. After completing the formalities, Banerjee left the premises without addressing the media or making any public remarks.
Abhijit Das, a leader from South 24 Parganas, had contested the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha seat for the second time. He had also contested against Abhishek Banerjee in 2014 but lost. In 2024, Banerjee, who is also the all-India general secretary of the Trinamool Congress, secured victory by a margin of more than seven lakh votes. Following his defeat, Das filed the petition in the High Court challenging both the conduct of the election and the result.
When Banerjee entered the court building, several lawyers supporting the Trinamool Congress gathered to meet him and sought photographs. Initially, Banerjee declined and went straight inside to complete his work. On his way out, however, he agreed to the request, posed for pictures with the lawyers, and then departed in his vehicle.
