Trinamool Congress leader and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee has sent a legal notice to Meta after unauthorized changes were made to his official Facebook page’s bio. The alteration removed the mention of his party, "All India Trinamool Congress," without his consent. The change was first noticed on February 11 when his followers alerted him. Banerjee’s legal team has demanded an investigation and immediate corrective action.
According to the legal notice issued by his lawyer, Sanjay Basu, Banerjee’s Facebook page, “AbhishekBanerjeeOfficial,” has around 2.2 million followers and serves as a key communication platform. The original bio stated, "The Official page of Abhishek Banerjee I Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) I National General Secretary, All India Trinamool Congress," but after the alteration, it only read, "The Official page of Abhishek Banerjee I Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) I National General Secretary." Copies of both versions have been enclosed in the notice as evidence.
The notice claims that Banerjee, as a Member of Parliament and National General Secretary of AITC, considers this an unauthorized breach, as he did not initiate or approve the change. His legal team argues that the alteration of a verified public figure’s account raises concerns over Meta’s security measures. The notice has asked Meta to provide a detailed explanation of how the breach occurred and identify those responsible for the unauthorized access.
The legal team has also sought an official acknowledgment from Meta regarding the impact of the alteration on Banerjee’s public image. The notice further demands that Meta outline new security measures to prevent similar incidents for verified accounts. An unconditional apology has been requested within seven days, failing which Banerjee may pursue legal action.
As of now, Meta has not issued an official response to the notice. The matter has gained attention due to Banerjee’s political position and the potential implications for digital security on social media platforms. His legal representatives have indicated that further steps will be taken if Meta does not comply within the stipulated period.
