ABVP tries to force entry into Jadavpur University, clashes with SFI; Police intervene

Tension erupted at Jadavpur University on Monday evening as ABVP activists attempted to forcefully enter the campus by breaking open Gate No. 4. Security personnel and members of the Left-affiliated SFI resisted the attempt, leading to clashes. ABVP supporters allegedly tore down SFI posters and flags, which escalated the situation. A large police force was deployed in response.

Jadavpur University security personnel stated that ABVP members tried to force their way inside and removed banners. "They were trying to force their way inside, tearing down posters and flags," said a university security guard. SFI members alleged that ABVP was attempting to disrupt the campus environment, with an SFI supporter stating, "ABVP tore down our posters and flags." ABVP, however, claimed they were holding a democratic protest and were forcibly removed by the police.

ABVP leaders justified their actions, claiming that Jadavpur University was a hub for Naxalite and Maoist activities. "Our fight is against them," said an ABVP representative, accusing Left student groups of controlling the university space. Meanwhile, Left student organizations staged a counter-protest at Jadavpur police station, alleging that ABVP members were outsiders trying to enter the campus unlawfully.

The police blocked an ABVP rally near Dakshinapan but later had to intervene at Jadavpur University as tensions escalated. The attempt to enter the university despite police restrictions has raised questions about the security measures in place and the increasing confrontations between student groups. The administration has not yet released an official statement regarding the incident.

Earlier, Minister Aroop Biswas had commented on the situation, dismissing ABVP's influence in Jadavpur. "They are nothing, they have no strength… If we wanted, it would take just a minute to take over Jadavpur," he had stated. He also accused ABVP of vandalizing the Education Minister’s car and attempting to create unrest. While police managed to contain the immediate situation, political tensions over student activism at Jadavpur University continue to rise.
