Tensions flared in Kolkata on Thursday afternoon as members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) took to the streets demanding clarity and action on OBC reservations. The protest march, which started from Karunamayee, aimed to reach Vikas Bhavan but was intercepted by a strong police force at the building’s main gate.
Carrying placards and chanting slogans, the ABVP workers alleged that the current reservation policies were not being implemented fairly. As the crowd surged forward, police personnel in riot gear formed a blockade, preventing them from entering the premises. The standoff created a tense atmosphere, though no major violence was reported.
The protesters insisted that their demands be heard by state education authorities, while the police maintained that section 144 was in force and no permission had been granted for such a gathering. The situation was brought under control after a brief scuffle, and several ABVP members were detained.
