A significant accident occurred in Mecheda market under Shahid Matangini block when land along the Sovadighi canal gave way during repair work, causing around 60 to 70 shops to collapse. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported, but goods stored in the shops suffered damage.
The collapse took place amid soil cutting and excavation work along the canal bank, which had been underway for the past few days after a long period of inactivity. Locals alleged that the excavation was not carried out scientifically and soil stabilization measures were ignored, weakening the ground.
Shopkeepers reported noticing small cracks in the soil prior to the collapse. Over time, these cracks widened, ultimately leading to the sudden subsidence and destruction of multiple shops. They also claimed that the depth of digging in this stretch was unusually high compared to other areas, disturbing the ground balance.
Following the incident, the Block Development Officer (BDO) of Shahid Matangini block visited the site to inspect the damage. Work in the affected area has been halted, and the administration has informed the Irrigation Department for further evaluation.
Political reactions emerged quickly. The BJP alleged that unscientific excavation by soil mafias, allegedly under the protection of the ruling party, caused the accident. The Trinamool Congress, however, rejected these claims, stating the canal repair work was legitimate and being carried out responsibly.
