Former Kolkata Police Commissioner and IPS officer Vineet Goyal faces potential action for allegedly revealing the identity of the victim. The Calcutta High Court has issued a notice on the matter following a petition filed by lawyer Anamika Pandey, who accused Goyal of breaching confidentiality norms.
The case was heard by a bench headed by Chief Justice TM Shivagnanam, which sought responses from the concerned parties. The Centre, represented in the court, clarified that the state government could take appropriate action against the former IPS officer. However, it also emphasized that the Centre would remain uninvolved, leaving the decision entirely to the state authorities.
Anamika Pandey’s petition has demanded that an FIR be registered against Vineet Goyal for his alleged misconduct. According to the petition, Goyal’s actions violated the legal principle of protecting the identity of victims, especially in sensitive cases involving crimes such as rape and murder.
The incident pertains to the high-profile case at RG Kar Medical College, where the murder of a junior doctor sparked national outrage. Goyal had allegedly mentioned the victim's name in his public statements, drawing criticism from legal and civil rights groups.
