Veteran actor and elocutionist Biplab Dasgupta passed away on Friday afternoon at his residence after a prolonged illness. He was 75. His wife, Ruma Dasgupta, confirmed that he had been suffering from an autoimmune disease for nearly one and a half years before breathing his last at home, marking the end of a long and diverse career across theatre, cinema and voice artistry.
Dasgupta had been associated with the film industry for over two decades, beginning his acting journey with the 2004 film Shadows of Time. Over the years, he appeared in several notable films, including Feluda, Baishe Srabon and Gumnaami. In 2019, he also featured in Debotar Grash alongside acclaimed actors Soumitra Chatterjee and Naseeruddin Shah, further cementing his presence in the industry.
A postgraduate in English from Jadavpur University, Dasgupta initially pursued a career in teaching before gradually moving into literature, theatre and media. He was widely respected as a skilled recitation artist and voice-over professional, contributing significantly to the advertising world. Eventually, he transitioned into full-time acting, where his performances and voice left a lasting impression across multiple creative fields.
