In a moment of immense cultural pride for West Bengal, the Union Government has announced the names of 11 distinguished individuals from the state for the prestigious Padma Shri awards 2026. Leading the contingent is Bengali cinema’s superstar Prosenjit Chatterjee, affectionately known as 'Bumba-da,' who has been recognized for his four-decade-long contribution to the field of Art. The list reflects Bengal’s enduring legacy in the creative and intellectual spheres, spanning across cinema, classical music, literature, and medicine.
The artistic honors for the state are particularly robust this year. Joining Prosenjit Chatterjee are legendary Tabla maestro Kumar Bose and renowned Santoor player Tarun Bhattacharya, both recognized for their mastery and global promotion of Indian classical music. Classical vocalist Tripti Mukherjee and veteran artist Jyotish Debnath have also been honored for their lifelong dedication to the arts. Posthumously, the government has recognized the contribution of Hari Madhab Mukhopadhyay, a towering figure in the world of theater, ensuring his legacy continues to inspire future generations.
Bengal’s intellectual and humanitarian spirit is well-represented in the fields of Literature, Education, and Medicine. Asok Kumar Haldar, Gambir Singh Yonzone, Mahendra Nath Roy, and Rabilal Tudu have been conferred the Padma Shri for their significant roles in enriching literature and advancing the cause of education. In the field of Medicine, Dr. Saroj Mandal has been honored for his exceptional service, highlighting the state’s continued contribution to healthcare and social welfare.
