Bengal Govt elevates IPS Ajay Mukund Ranade to DGP (Law and Order)
The sudden and tragic death of popular Bengali actor Rahul Arunoday Banerjee (43) has sparked a wave of grief and demands for a thorough investigation. Rahul reportedly drowned on Sunday evening while shooting for a television series titled "Bhole Baba Paar Karega" at Talsari beach, located near the West Bengal-Odisha border. While preliminary reports suggest he was swept away by a massive wave after insisting on an unscripted drone shot, the circumstances surrounding the incident have prompted calls for a closer look at safety protocols and production management.
The actor's residence in Vijaygarh saw a steady stream of mourners and high-profile visitors on Monday. Former minister Arup Biswas visited the family to offer his condolences and assured them of the state's support during this crisis. Senior actor Prosenjit Chatterjee also met with the bereaved family to pay his respects. Meanwhile, Papiya Adhikari, a veteran actress and BJP candidate for Tollygunge, visited the home and demanded a high-level inquiry. She questioned why a production unit was filming in a neighboring state without allegedly securing all necessary permissions and who would take responsibility for the safety of the crew in such situations.
On the legal front, the Digha Police Station has registered a case of unnatural death. Investigations are complicated by jurisdictional issues, as the incident occurred at Talsari beach in Odisha, but the actor was declared dead at Digha State General Hospital in West Bengal. Odisha Police have raised concerns that the shooting might have been conducted without official permission. Authorities from both states are now coordinating to ascertain the exact sequence of events and determine if there was any negligence on the part of the production house.
The Bengali entertainment industry remains in deep mourning for the "Chirodini Tumi Je Amar" star. Mamata Banerjee took to X and condole his demise. She wrote, "Distinguished, young, and popular actor Rahul Arunoday Banerjee is suddenly no longer among us—this news has left me stunned, heartbroken, and grief-stricken. I just can’t make sense of how this happened. He was one of my favorite actors and a wonderful person. I extend my heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family, loved ones, and countless admirers. Rahul’s sudden departure is an irreparable loss for the Bengali acting world, Tollywood, and Teelwood."
