Posta merchants go on indefinite strike to protest heckling of its office bearers
The investigation into the financial irregularities surrounding Trinamool Congress MLA Debraj Chakraborty intensified on Thursday as investigators subjected his wife, popular singer Aditi Munsi, to a grueling six-hour interrogation. The intensive questioning session occurred concurrently with multi-location raids conducted at several residential properties owned by the family. Following Chakraborty’s high-profile arrest, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) filed a fresh First Information Report (FIR) against him, with central probe agencies now organizing a face-to-face interrogation between the couple to map out how much Munsi knew about the underlying illegal assets and monetary transfers.
Chakraborty, who represents the Rajarhat-Gopalpur assembly constituency in North 24 Parganas, was tracked down and apprehended on Wednesday by a joint team comprising the West Bengal Special Task Force (STF) and the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate. Law enforcement officials utilized advanced technical surveillance to pinpoint his hiding spot at a hotel located in the remote Ayodhya Pahartali area of Purulia district. The coordinated raid was launched immediately after the High Court rejected Chakraborty's legal petition seeking protection from coercive custodial action, which had kept local police units on high alert for several days.
Drama escalated significantly on Thursday morning when police escorts presented the arrested lawmaker before the Barasat Court for his formal remand hearing. An agitated crowd gathered outside the judicial complex and aggressively pelted eggs directly at Chakraborty while chanting slogans, prompting a security breach before security forces managed to restore layout control. The prosecution presented the extensive evidence involving accumulated disproportionate assets, extortion networks, and money laundering rackets, after which the presiding judge remanded Chakraborty to police custody for seven days to facilitate deeper inquiry.
