A couple from Liluah attempted suicide into the Ganges river while traveling on a launch from Salkia Bandhaghat to Ahiritola, Kolkata. The incident took place early Saturday morning around 6:30 AM when the launch reached mid-river. Both the husband and wife jumped into the river together, prompting immediate action from the launch crew who also jumped in and used a safety tire to rescue them. The couple was brought back to the shore alive and is currently receiving medical treatment.
Police sources confirmed that the couple had boarded the Bhutal Paribahan launch at Salkia Bandhaghat with tickets to Ahiritola. The police identified the couple as residents of Liluah Bhattanagar. It was reported that they had lost their only daughter recently, an 11-year-old who died due to kidney-related health issues. Following this loss, the couple had been suffering from depression, which reportedly led to their suicide attempt in the river.
After the rescue, Malipanchghara police arrived at the scene to provide assistance and took the couple for preliminary medical care. Authorities are in contact with the family members of the couple. The incident caused unrest among other passengers on the launch until the situation was brought under control. The quick response of the launch crew was key in preventing the deaths of both individuals.
