For 48 consecutive years, ISKCON’s Ratha Yatra chariots used wheels originally manufactured for Boeing-747 aircraft by Dunlop. These heavy-duty aircraft wheels were repurposed annually for the procession due to their strength and load-bearing capacity. However, following the discontinuation of Dunlop’s production of Boeing-747 wheels, ISKCON had to seek a reliable replacement to continue the large-scale event.
This year, the chariots will be fitted with wheels from Indian Air Force Sukhoi fighter jets. Known for their ability to withstand extreme operational conditions, the Sukhoi wheels were sourced after evaluating multiple alternatives. The selection was based on their structural integrity, performance under heavy weight, and availability in the required quantity and condition.
The new wheels are expected to ensure safe and stable movement of the massive wooden chariots during the Ratha Yatra. This marks the first time that military-grade aviation components are being used in the religious procession. ISKCON organisers confirmed that the shift was made due to necessity and suitability, maintaining continuity in the decades-long celebration.
