A 20-year-old engineering student in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, resorted to publicly stripping in an attempt to pressure authorities into arresting the man she accused of raping her. After 17 days of alleged inaction, the accused, a 22-year-old MTech student at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Jammu, was finally arrested on Tuesday.
The young woman from Lucknow alleged in her complaint that she was raped in a moving car by the accused on August 10. Despite filing an FIR on August 11, the police reportedly delayed the arrest, citing that the accused was in Jammu at the time of the alleged incident. Over the next two weeks, the student made repeated visits to police stations and met with senior officers, but her pleas for action went unanswered.
Out of frustration, she stripped publicly on Sunday to compel the authorities to address her case. Following the protest, she was taken to a mental hospital for observation for three days. The accused, originally from Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, was arrested soon after. Before his MTech at IIT Jammu, he had completed his BTech from a university in Agra.
