Air India has announced changes to its baggage allowance policy for economy class domestic flyers, affecting those opting for lower fare brackets. Previously, passengers enjoyed a 25kg allowance, but now it has been reduced to 15kg. This adjustment aligns Air India with other major Indian carriers, streamlining baggage policies across the industry.
The airline has introduced three fare groups – Comfort, Comfort Plus, and Flex – each offering distinct benefits are designed to allow passengers to select fares and services that best suit their requirements, considering the diverse preferences of travellers.
According to an Air India spokesperson, the decision to revise baggage allowances is part of a broader effort to implement a menu-based pricing model or branded fare families, bringing Air India in line with global airline industry standards.
With effect from May 2, the free cabin baggage allowance for the 'Comfort' and 'Comfort Plus' categories has been reduced to 15 kg from 20 kg and 25 kg, respectively, as per the airline's statement. Business class baggage allowance on domestic routes ranges from 25kg to 35kg. Free baggage allowance on international flights varies from market to market, the spokesperson said.
