The decision was made by the three-member Cricket Advisory Committee. Agarkar, known for his distinguished career, will lead a five-member committee responsible for selecting talented players for the Indian national team
The BCCI expects Agarkar to leverage his experience and knowledge to maintain the team's competitive edge while nurturing young talent
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the appointment of former Indian pacer Ajit Agarkar as the Chairman of the Senior Men's Selection Committee.
This decision was made by the three-member Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) comprising Sulakshana Naik, Ashok Malhotra, and Jatin Paranjape.
Following the departure of Chetan Sharma in February 2023 from the chief selector's position, which occurred after a controversial sting operation, the selection committee was left without a leader. Chetan Sharma was allegedly caught on camera suggesting that Indian cricketers, including Hardik Pandya, had been taking injections to maintain their fitness levels.
This incident led to a loss of faith in Sharma by both the team management and the players. Ajit Agarkar, a former fast bowler who represented the Indian cricket team with distinction, will now take charge of the selection committee. Agarkar's illustrious career includes representing India in 26 Tests and 191 One Day Internationals (ODIs), where he showcased his skills as a valuable all-rounder.
The five-man selection committee, under Agarkar's leadership, will consist of Shiv Sundar Das, Subroto Banerjee, Salil Ankola, and Sridharan Sharath. These individuals have been entrusted with the responsibility of identifying and choosing the most talented players for the Indian national team across various formats of the game.
Ajit Agarkar's vast experience and knowledge of the game, combined with his understanding of the dynamics of modern-day cricket, make him a suitable choice for the role of Chairman of the Senior Men's Selection Committee.
The BCCI believes that under his leadership, the selection committee will continue to identify and nurture promising talent while ensuring the Indian team maintains its competitive edge on the international stage.
