By-polls announced on 6 Assembly & 1 Lok Sabha seat of Bengal on Nov 13
Bollywood star Akshay Kumar, who has often faced criticism for his Canadian citizenship, says India is everything to him and has already applied for a passport change. He feels bad when people say things without knowing the reason why he took Canadian citizenship,
"India is everything to me... Whatever I have earned, whatever I have acquired, is from here." And I'm lucky to have the chance to give back. You feel bad when people say things without knowing anything…,” the 55-year-old star said.
Akshay, known for films like Hera Pheri, Namastey London, Toilet: Ek Prem Katha and Padman, also talked about the lean phase of his career when he performed more than 15 flops. That was in the nineties. The poor box office performance of his films prompted him to apply for Canadian citizenship, he said.
“I thought, 'bhai, my films are not working and one has to work'. I went there for work. My friend was in Canada, and he said, 'come here'. I logged in and got on. “I had only two films left to release, and it's just lucky that both became superhits. My friend said, 'Go back, start working again'. I got more films and still had more work to do. I forgot I had my passport.”
"I never thought I should get this passport changed, but now I have applied to change my passport and once I get the waiver status from Canada..." Akshay's citizenship became a topic of debate after his interview with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in April 2019 just before the Lok Sabha elections.
