Allahabad HC grants Home Ministry 10-day extension in Rahul Gandhi dual citizenship case

The Allahabad High Court on Tuesday granted an additional 10 days to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to submit their report on the plea alleging that Congress leader and Lok Sabha Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi holds dual citizenship. The next hearing in the matter has been scheduled for May 5.

The petition under review claims that Rahul Gandhi is a citizen of both India and the United Kingdom, which, if proven true, would render him ineligible to be a Member of Parliament. Under Indian law, dual citizenship is not permitted, and any violation could have serious legal implications for holding public office.

During the hearing, the MHA's counsel requested more time to verify critical information with the UK authorities. Accepting the request, the court provided an extension and set a strict deadline for the submission of the final report. This report will be crucial for determining the next course of action in the case.

Meanwhile, outside the courtroom, Rahul Gandhi continued his political activities. He recently wrote to Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, urging them to enact the Rohith Vemula Act to curb caste-based discrimination in educational institutions.

In his letter, Rahul Gandhi referred to the struggles faced by Dalit, Adivasi, and OBC students, citing the tragic deaths of Rohith Vemula, Payal Tadvi, and Darshan Solanki. He emphasized the urgent need for legislation to protect students from systemic discrimination and to uphold the values envisioned by Dr. B. R. Ambedkar.

As the legal and political developments unfold, all eyes are now on the Home Ministry’s upcoming report, which could have significant consequences for one of the country’s most prominent political leaders.
