Amit Shah appointed BJP observer for Bengal, to decide next Chief Minister

The Bharatiya Janata Party has appointed Union Home Minister Amit Shah as its central observer for West Bengal, entrusting him with the crucial task of overseeing the election of the party’s legislative leader, who will become the next Chief Minister. The decision comes after the BJP’s sweeping victory in the 2026 Assembly elections, where it secured 207 seats, marking a historic political shift in the state.

As central observer, Amit Shah will supervise the process of selecting the legislative party leader, effectively playing a decisive role in determining the Chief Ministerial face of the new government. The appointment signals the party leadership’s intent to closely manage the transition of power in Bengal, with the swearing-in of the new government scheduled for May 9.
