Union Home Minister Amit Shah, addressing a high-voltage rally in Darjeeling on the occasion of Poila Boishakh, promised a permanent solution to the long-standing Gorkha issue if the Bharatiya Janata Party comes to power in West Bengal. Highlighting North Bengal as a stronghold of the BJP, he asserted that the party aims to replicate its previous electoral success in the region in the upcoming elections.
During his speech, Shah said that the BJP is committed to resolving the Gorkha issue within the constitutional framework. He alleged that under the current government, a “police raj” has prevailed in the hills and that many Gorkhas have faced false cases. He assured that if the BJP forms the government, such cases against Gorkha movement activists would be withdrawn and long-pending grievances would be addressed.
Shah also criticised the state government over its alleged lack of cooperation on the issue. He claimed that despite convening multiple meetings in the past, neither the Chief Minister nor her representatives attended discussions in Delhi. Emphasising his commitment, he remarked that when the state leadership did not respond, he chose to come directly to Bengal to engage with the people.
Reiterating his political message, Shah expressed confidence that the BJP would form the government and prioritise resolving the Gorkha issue. He accused the ruling leadership of deliberately keeping the matter unresolved and said that ensuring justice for the people of the hills would be among the party’s top agendas if voted to power.
